Fu-in Incense Trio Discovery Set

Dispatched from Sydney within 1–2 business days. Tracked with signature on delivery.

The Fu-in Discovery Set brings together three of Minorien's most celebrated fragrances in a beautifully crafted paulownia wood presentation box. Featuring Byakudan (Sandalwood), Jinkō (Aloeswood) and Kyara, it offers an opportunity to experience the progression from familiar fragrant woods through to one of the most revered aromatic materials in the Japanese incense tradition.

Each fragrance has been carefully selected to express the natural character of its principal ingredient with clarity and restraint. Rather than relying on overt perfume, Minorien's compositions allow the distinctive qualities of each wood to unfold gradually, revealing the subtle differences in warmth, sweetness, resin and complexity that have made the Fu-in Series one of Japan's most highly regarded collections.

Presented in shorter sticks, the Discovery Set is ideal for those exploring Minorien for the first time, appreciating a shorter burning session, or as a thoughtful gift for anyone beginning their journey into Japanese incense.

About this Collection
The Fu-in Series was developed to showcase exceptional aromatic materials with as little distraction as possible. Rather than constructing elaborate fragrances, each incense is centred on a single principal ingredient, allowing its natural character to remain the defining feature throughout the burn.

This Discovery Set provides an introduction to the series through three of its most recognised fragrances, illustrating the progression from the creamy warmth of sandalwood to the resinous complexity of aloeswood and finally the extraordinary refinement of kyara. It offers a rare opportunity to experience these fragrant woods side by side and better appreciate the qualities that distinguish each one.

About the Producer
For generations, the family behind Minorien operated an incense shop in Osaka, serving temples and households with traditional Japanese incense. During the air raids of the Second World War, the family was forced to leave Osaka and relocated to Katata in Shiga Prefecture. It was there that the foundations of the present company were established before eventually settling in nearby Wani, where the business adopted the name Minorien.

Today, Minorien remains an independent manufacturer specialising in incense made from carefully selected natural aromatic materials. Rather than creating fragrances dominated by perfume, its approach is to reveal the inherent character of sandalwood, aloeswood and other fragrant woods through restrained, balanced compositions. The company often likens this philosophy to shōjin ryōri, where the role of the maker is to draw out the qualities already present within each ingredient. The result is incense valued by both temples and private collectors for its depth, refinement and authenticity.

Wani, Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan

The story of Minorien begins not in Shiga Prefecture, but in Osaka, where the founding family operated an incense business supplying temples and households with traditional Japanese incense. During the Second World War, the destruction brought by the air raids forced the family to leave the city and relocate to Katata, on the western shores of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. It was there that the foundations of the present company were established before moving a short distance north to Wani, where the name Minorien was adopted.

Although the company has evolved over the decades, its philosophy has remained remarkably consistent. Minorien has never pursued incense as an exercise in perfume. Instead, its work begins with the belief that exceptional aromatic materials possess their own character, and that the responsibility of the incense maker is to preserve and reveal those qualities rather than overwhelm them with excessive blending.

The company frequently compares this approach to shōjin ryōri, the traditional Buddhist cuisine in which ingredients are prepared to express their inherent flavour rather than being transformed beyond recognition. Minorien applies the same principle to incense. Sandalwood should retain the creamy warmth and gentle sweetness that define sandalwood. Aloeswood should express its resinous depth, evolving complexity and subtle bitterness. Each ingredient is selected and balanced so its individual character remains recognisable throughout the burn.

This philosophy explains why many of Minorien's best-known collections, including the Fu-in Series, focus on a single aromatic material rather than heavily layered fragrances. The compositions are restrained, allowing the quality of the raw materials to remain the defining feature of the incense.

Natural aromatic materials vary from harvest to harvest. Differences in origin, climate, age and resin development mean no two batches are ever completely identical. Rather than forcing absolute uniformity, Minorien embraces these subtle variations while maintaining the balance and character expected of each incense. This respect for the material is one of the reasons the house has earned a reputation among both Japanese incense practitioners and collectors worldwide.

Minorien continues to manufacture its incense in Wani, a district of Otsu situated between the western shoreline of Lake Biwa and the Hira mountain range. The area has long served as a gateway between Kyoto and the ancient Ōmi Province, with a history shaped by temples, merchants and travellers moving through the region. Surrounded by mountains and Japan's largest freshwater lake, Wani provides an environment that reflects the company's understated approach to craftsmanship: patient, measured and centred on the careful handling of natural fragrant woods.

Today, Minorien remains one of Japan's most respected independent incense makers. Its work is appreciated not for dramatic fragrance or overt perfumery, but for its ability to reveal the depth, elegance and quiet complexity found within some of the world's finest aromatic materials.
