Marukyu Koyamaen Wako Matcha - 100g

Marukyu Koyamaen's Wako is one of their highest grade Principal matchas available for Usacha (thin tea) and understandably so. By far one of the most elegant, well balanced ceremonial blends we've tasted from Marukyu Koyamaen. The powder is a bright vibrant green, synonymous with most higher grade matchas with a very light, refreshing aroma. We recommend this tea be savoured slowly in order to enjoy the full effects of the flavours that come through. With almost hardly any detectable bitterness or astringency, you are greeted with an intense hit of of bright, fresh green, vegetal flavours before it rounds out with a rich, savoury walnut-like nuttiness that lends to its creaminess. Towards the end, you'll notice a gentle citrus tartness before yielding a warm, soft cocao-like sweetness that coats the mouth, finishing off with a smooth lingering tea taste. In comparison to Yugen, this blend isn't as sweet and has richer, more pronounced green notes. Ideal for matcha latte drinkers that prefer the pronounced vegetal flavours of a bold matcha.

Ceremonial matcha are graded by the most revered 'Chasi' or tea masters in Japan and given their respective poetic names derived from the essence of the tea by these masters. Wako translates to 'Peaceful Light', thanks to the beautiful green hue of this tea and the very balanced and harmonious flavours of green, creamy, savoury and sweet of this blend.

Marukyu Koyamaen's '丸久小山園', history spans 300 years, and epitomises a commitment to quality in tea production. Located in the heart of Uji, Kyoto, this esteemed tea grower, procurer, and blender boasts a private estate dating back to 1704. Their range of Japanese green teas are meticulously crafted through a combination of traditional and modern techniques and remains unparalleled in the world of Matcha making. Favoured by the tea schools, shrines, temples and widely seen in the kitchens of some of the world's best restaurants and hotels, the Marukyu Koyamaen name today is far reaching and widely recognised.
