Stansborough scarves are woven in New Zealand from wool loomed from a unique breed of Stansborough sheep. This breed was discovered in the 1990s on the South Island from a flock that hand been brought over from Denmark 20 year prior. Their grey fleece prized for keeping out the harsh north wind.
A 25 year long process, Stansborough now own the only flock of 1500 pure bred, lustrous grey fleece producing animals. Once shorn, the fleece is sorted by hand into the 3 shades of grey that naturally occur on their coat before they are spun and woven. The result, a whole greyscale spectrum to create their collection of wool products.
Where colour is used, they only work with biodegradable and eco-friendly dyes. All textiles are created on looms from the 1890's and one of the the last few used in commercial production in the world. They also farm alpacas, work with a local New Zealand supplier of merino and import organic bamboo to create blended textiles.
