Ryuoen Chaho's Koun no Shiro Matcha enters as mid-level ceremonial grade matcha and is known for its harmonious blend thanks to the smooth and creamy mouth-feel. A low astringency tea that starts with light and delicate green notes of fresh dew and a gentle bitterness. There is an overall lightness in this particular blend that makes it very pleasant. The powder is a soft, mellow green that starts with bright, floral aromas with a hint of citrus before it opens with a warm, savoury tone thanks to a nuttiness that comes through at the end.
As a ceremonial grade matcha, this tea was given its poetic name Kuon no Shiro 江雲の白 - One Auspicious Cloud by the revered Chashi (or teamasters) - an apt name given its delicate, flavours and a overall gentle and light feel.
Ryuoen Tea House started in 1875 and is rarely available outside of Japan. This boutique producer still mills its leaves on site using stone mills.
