These traditional bamboo whisks made in Takayama, Nara Prefecture speak ofhigh-quality, authentic matcha whisks that embodies the rich heritage of Japanese tea culture. Each whisk is made by hand from a single piece of locally grown bamboo with the individual tines are split and shaped so that they are strong and flexible - allowing for effective whisking of powderered teas.
The village of Takayama is renowned for its chasen production,dating back over 5 centuries,and is considered the only area in Japan dedicated to this craft. Today, there exist a handful of chasen masters in Takayama who are dedicated to preserving traditional techniques and their efforts has catapultedthe Takayama chasen to being recognised as a national traditional craft due to its historical and cultural significance.
There are different types of chasens, including those with 80 tines (or prongs) i.e. hachijyuppondate, or 100 tines - hyakunijyuppondate, and other variations depending on the tea ceremony school and desired whisking style.
