Our Straits Shorts are made using vintage batik fabric, using age old techniques. Wax resistent dyeing of this type, make use of cotton or linen, beeswax and various plant-based vegetable dyes. With the help of a spouting tool called a canting the master artisan then makes intricate patterns out of drawn dots and lines of the resist. The application of wax resists dyes and allows the craftsman to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating this process with other colours are desired.
Layers up laters of colours are applied on the intricately drawn patterns, making the Straits Shorts what they are. Drawing from reference from cultures as diverse as native Indonesian, Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Chinese, Colonial European and Japanese cultures. Each pattern is unique and tells a different story.
