Sir Ralph Darling cut an unpopular figure and ironically no-one's 'homeslice' with his rigid laws and policies that ruthlessly and implacably countered all attempts to establish a theatre, and other dramatic arts, and the freedom of press in those early days. Where he once ruled with punishment, he now runs a pizza joint in our imagination — and this time, everyone gets a slice.
