Ogurayama from distinguished tea producer Yamamasa Koyamaen is a smooth, well-balanced blend with a vibrant green, finely milled powder. Noticeably, as with most Yamamasa Koyamaen blends, Ogurayama has a dominant nutty aroma before sweet, floral and bright citrus notes emerge as the matcha blooms. Flavour wise, Ogurayama is evenly keeled with a barely noticeable bitterness - it starts with a good amount of creaminess (that lingers to the end) and just enough sweetness. The nuttiness of sesame gives Ogurayami its savoury umami, spring vegetables like snow peas and asparagus lends to the refreshing and bright vegetal flavours. The finish is refreshing, smooth with a gentle astringency. Overall, nice depth and balance of flavours and is well suited for those new to matcha or those who prefer less vegetal forward blend for everyday drinking.
Yamamasa Koyamaen's long history dates back to the 1600s as tea growers and is today respected for their enduring contributions to Japan's tea industry. They believe that producing consistent, high quality tea starts from the growing stage, an ethos that has been passed down for generations since the company started selling their tea in 1861. Maintaining time honoured traditions, their tea craftsmen still grind their matcha powder using stone disks. This labour intensive method requires a highly trained artisan to grind the leaves at a certain speed at all times so the leaves don't burn or ground unevenly.
