The origins of Yamamasa Koyamaen dates back to the Edo Era (1600s) with a history steeped in early tea cultivation. In 1861, the company's founder Masajiro Koyama started selling tea with their generations old knowledge in cultivation and manufacturing. Today, Yamamasa Koyamaen is recognised for its significant contributions to the tea industry in Japan.
Yamamasa Koyamaen's tea artisans continue to use an 800-year-old method of grinding the leaves using large stones disks. The stones themselves have become a rare commodity in Japan as only a handful of craftsmen are able to produce them today. The stone-milled leaves have to be ground with precision in order to produce the top quality Matcha powder that brand it known for.
