Introducing the Japanese Gourmet Pantry

  • 2 min read

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing shift toward cooking and eating more intentionally at home. With restaurants closed for long periods and travel largely paused, many people have started paying closer attention to the ingredients they keep in their kitchen and pantry.

As part of this shift, we’ve begun expanding Eastern Hill General Supplies further into Japanese gourmet pantry staples and tea producers that focus on quality, regional production and everyday use.

The introduction of the pantry is not intended to replicate a supermarket experience, but rather to bring together producers and products that reflect the same level of consideration we’ve always looked for in clothing, objects and design. Products with a clear point of view, strong provenance and longevity in use.

Among the first producers to arrive is Marukyu Koyamaen from Kyoto, established in 1704 and regarded for its long history in Uji tea production. We’ll be gradually expanding our range of matcha and green tea from the producer over the coming months, beginning with everyday drinking matcha suitable for both usucha and latte preparation.

We’ve also introduced products from Nitto Jozo, the Aichi based producer known for traditionally brewed vinegars, ponzu and seasonings produced through slower fermentation methods and natural brewing processes.

Alongside these are small production Japanese pantry staples including Yuki Tsubaki Koshihikari rice from Niigata Prefecture and sesame products from Osaka producer Wadaman, established in 1883 and recognised for its deeply aromatic roasted sesame and sesame based products.

Also arriving are sesame products from Osaka producer Wadaman, established in 1883 and recognised for its deeply aromatic roasted sesame, sesame pastes and traditional sesame processing techniques that continue to support both home cooking and professional kitchens across Japan.

While the categories may appear different on the surface, the addition of tea and pantry staples feels like a natural extension of the store. The same principles that guide our approach to clothing and objects continue here: longevity, material quality, thoughtful production and products designed for repeated daily use.

Over the coming months we’ll continue expanding the pantry with a growing selection of Japanese tea, condiments, pantry staples and producers that align with this direction.

Update 2026

What began as a small introduction to Japanese pantry staples during the lockdown period gradually became one of the foundations that shaped Eastern Hill General Supplies moving forward. The pantry category would eventually expand into a broader Japanese tea and gourmet offering, including deeper relationships with tea producers, matcha, regional pantry staples and daily goods that continue to form part of the Eastern Hill ecosystem today.
