These traditional bamboo whisks made in Takayama, Nara Prefecture speak of high-quality, authentic matcha whisks that embodies the rich heritage of Japanese tea culture. Each whisk is made by hand from a single piece of locally grown bamboo with the individual tines are split and shaped so that they are strong and flexible - allowing for effective whisking of powdered teas.
The village of Takayama is renowned for its chasen production, dating back over 5 centuries, and is considered the only area in Japan dedicated to this craft. Today, there exist a handful of chasen masters in Takayama who are dedicated to preserving traditional techniques and their efforts has catapulted the Takayama chasen to being recognised as a national traditional craft due to its historical and cultural significance.
There are different types of chasens, including those with 80 tines (or prongs) i.e.
hachijyuppondate, or 100 tines -
hyakunijyuppondate, and other variations depending on the tea ceremony school and desired whisking style.
