The A-2 was standardised by the US Army Air Corps on 9 May 1931. Everything about it was a functional decision. The goatskin leather resisted wind and abrasion. The knit cuffs and waistband sealed heat at the wrists and waist. The close-fitting silhouette prevented the jacket from becoming a drag obstacle in an open cockpit. The single-piece back limited stress on the garment. The snap flap pockets stored maps and equipment. Nothing was decorative. Everything worked.
By World War II it had become the defining jacket of the American fighter pilot. Seal brown — the darker of the two approved colourways — worn by the men flying over Europe and the Pacific. Pilots painted squadron insignia and mission counts on the back. The jacket became a personal document as much as a uniform.
These solutions have not been improved upon in 90 years of subsequent design. This A-2 is manufactured in the United States from premium goatskin leather, built to the original military specification and sized for the Australian body.
Seal brown. The correct colour. The original jacket.
