Jōen (常苑), meaning Enduring Green, is a full-bodied matcha selected for strength and lasting flavour. Crafted in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture by heritage producer Aoi Seicha, it is designed with a clear purpose within the Higashiyama-en range: performance and durability across milk, ice and kitchen applications.
In powder form, the aroma is warm and grounded, with notes of sweet cacao and the earthiness of roasted chestnuts, layered with savoury umami and a subtle toasted character reminiscent of soy glazed rice crackers and wasabi peas. Despite its depth, the profile retains the brightness and clean lift characteristic of Nishio matcha.
This blend is intentionally more robust than matcha designed for straight drinking. Its vegetal intensity, deeper umami and clean, structured bitterness allow the flavour to carry confidently through milk, plant-based alternatives, coconut water, fruit purées and sweeteners without becoming lost or muted.
As dairy or sweetness is added, the bitterness softens almost completely, revealing a creamy texture and subtle floral lift, while the fresh green character remains clear and defined. It is not intended for delicate usucha preparation, but for applications where strength and clarity are required.
Under the Higashiyama-en name, each matcha is chosen for a specific role. Jōen is the working matcha of the range, suited to daily lattes, iced drinks and kitchen use where flavour strength matters.
A strong, enduring matcha that keeps its depth, colour and presence wherever you use it.
