Batik has been made in Java since at least the 12th century. In 2009 UNESCO added Indonesian batik to its list of intangible cultural heritage — recognition that this is not just a textile technique but a living cultural practice passed down through generations of makers.

The Straits Pant is made from batik cap — block-printed cotton where a copper stamp is pressed into wax and applied to the fabric one colour at a time. Each layer is applied by hand separately. The result is what you see in the finished cloth — depth, variation and the kind of pattern that could not come from a machine.

Cut as a high-waisted wide leg pant with a tie-front belt, double pleat and cropped length, the silhouette is relaxed and considered in equal measure. The block print fabric does the work. The cut steps back and lets it.

A Footage Made piece for Isle of Tigers. Tailor made in Singapore.
