We created the Isle of Tigers tee as part of the collection of our modern interpretation of unique items that chronicle the merged and convergent cultures of the Straits born (Peranakan) of Singapore. Peranakan or persons of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage, trace their origins to 15th-century Malacca, where their ancestors were thought to be Chinese traders who married local women.
As legend would have it, Sang Nila Utama, a Palembang prince and founder of the Kingdom of Singapura 1299, had chanced upon a wild beast (a Lion) that disappeared into the jungle, whilst hunting and saw it as a good omen to build up his new city. History would suggest otherwise as no lions were ever native to Singapore and we believe Sang had instead seen a tiger. The icon tee an ode to the lion city.
