Every suburb had one. Neon sign in the window, laminated menu by the phone, the same reliable order placed on a Sunday night so someone got a break from the kitchen. Honey king prawn, mongolian lamb, sweet and sour pork, fried rice for the table. For a generation of Australians growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s, the local Chinese restaurant was as much a part of the week as anything else.
The Rice Rice Baby Tee is an ode to those places and the families who ran them. Cantonese cooking that crossed oceans, adapted to what was available, and fed entire neighbourhoods without fanfare. The blue and white rice bowl on the graphic is the one that was already on every table.
Part of the Eastern Hill Goods line and our ongoing study of the food cultures that quietly shaped who we are.
