About Milk Glass

Milk glass has been produced for centuries, reaching the height of its popularity from the late nineteenth century through to the mid twentieth century. Inspired by earlier French decorative glass, it became a staple of homes throughout Europe and America, valued for its elegant appearance, durability and versatility.

Today, authentic vintage milk glass is appreciated for its timeless aesthetic, subtle variations and the character that only decades of careful use can create.

Condition

This is an original vintage piece and is sold individually.

Each platter is in excellent vintage condition with only light signs of age consistent with careful use. Minor surface marks, subtle variations in tone and occasional tiny manufacturing specks may be present. These small inclusions occurred during the original production process and form part of the character of authentic vintage milk glass rather than being considered defects.

Every piece is individually inspected prior to shipping.

Milk glass was produced around 300 years before it reached the height of its popularity, which began around 1870 and lasted through the early 20th century. When it came to milk glass, the French were the trendsetters, ushering it into its golden era and inspiring American glassmakers to follow suit. Today French milk glass is particularly valuable.

Emulating the French, well-to-do American families stocked up on milk glass dinnerware, serving dishes, and pitchers. The pieces, some bedecked with diamond-cut patterns, molded with latticework, or artfully painted, made a splash in turn-of-the-century America and remained popular until the days of the Great Depression. They came back into vogue during the 1960s thanks to the production of Hobnail milk glass.
