Whisk - Chasen

Choose a No. Of Tines

These traditional bamboo whisks made in Takayama, Nara Prefecture speak ofhigh-quality, authentic matcha whisks that embodies the rich heritage of Japanese tea culture. Each whisk is made by hand from a single piece of locally grown bamboo with the individual tines are split and shaped so that they are strong and flexible - allowing for effective whisking of powderered teas.

The village of Takayama is renowned for its chasen production, dating back over 5 centuries, and is considered the only area in Japan dedicated to this craft. Today, there exist a handful of chasen masters in Takayama who are dedicated to preserving  traditional techniques and their efforts has catapultedthe Takayama chasen to being recognised as a national traditional craft due to its historical and cultural significance.

There are different types of chasens, including those with 80 tines (or prongs) i.e. hachijyuppondate, or 100 tines - hyakunijyuppondate, and other variations depending on the tea ceremony school and desired whisking style.

  • 80 Prong (Hachijuppon-dake):
    • Best for everyday use and preparing thin matcha (usucha).
    • Produces a good balance of froth and a slightly coarser texture.
    • Generally easier to clean and more durable than 100-prong whisks.
  • 100 Prong (Hyappon-dake):
    • Ideal for those who prefer a creamier, smoother froth.
    • Creates a finer, more delicate froth.
    • May require more care and is sometimes considered more delicate.
    • A good choice for those who enjoy the ritual of preparing matcha and desire a specific texture.
